A guardian. A patron. A home for those who need it most — born in Zimbabwe, reaching beyond borders.
"We saw people falling through the cracks — talented, worthy, full of potential — and we refused to look away."
— Danya, FounderLa Patrona Foundation was born from a deeply personal conviction: that every human being, regardless of their circumstances or origins, deserves dignity, opportunity, and a community that believes in them. Our founder Danya Kabwebwe witnessed firsthand the invisible walls that separate the privileged from the vulnerable — in classrooms with empty desks, in border crossings filled with uncertainty, in communities where potential quietly suffocates.
The name "La Patrona" carries centuries of meaning. In the Spanish and Latin traditions, a patrona is a guardian — a protector who advocates for those who cannot yet advocate for themselves. We chose it deliberately, as both a promise and a calling. We are here to stand beside those who need it, not above them.
Founded in Zimbabwe, our roots are deeply local — woven into the communities of Harare and beyond. But our vision has never been constrained by geography. Migration is not a crisis to be managed; it is a human reality to be met with grace. We serve those on the move just as readily as those who have always called Zimbabwe home.
Today, La Patrona Foundation runs three interconnected programs that address the most critical pressure points in our communities: education for every child, support for migrants and immigrants navigating their journey, and broad community upliftment. Every program is driven by the same belief — that investing in people is the most powerful thing any of us can do.
Guardian · Advocate · Community Builder
Behind La Patrona Foundation is Danya Kabwebwe — a woman whose life's work has been shaped by a single, unshakeable belief: that every person, regardless of their circumstances, deserves to be seen, supported, and given the chance to flourish.
At the age of 21, Danya had already demonstrated a deep and enduring commitment to giving back to the community. Driven by a genuine passion for service, she began supporting a local children’s home in Eastlea by donating food supplies to help meet the daily needs of vulnerable children. This early act of generosity not only reflected her compassion but also marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to uplifting underserved communities. Her work in Eastlea laid the foundation for a mission rooted in empathy, dignity, and the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive.
"I didn't start La Patrona because I had all the answers. I started it because I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try."
With a background in community development and a network built through years of grassroots work across Zimbabwe, Danya founded La Patrona to be the organisation she wished had existed — one that treated people as whole human beings, not problems to be processed. She leads every program with the same hands-on intensity that defined those early days: present, listening, and relentlessly optimistic.
Two lenses, one purpose — everything we do flows from these two commitments.
To foster a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate society by uplifting underprivileged communities in Zimbabwe and providing critical, dignified assistance to immigrants and migrants building a new life in a new land.
We envision a world where every child can access quality education, every migrant is welcomed with humanity, and every community has the resources and networks it needs to thrive — regardless of borders, backgrounds, or bank accounts.
These are not words on a wall — they are the daily decisions, the difficult conversations, and the quiet choices that define how we show up for the people we serve.
We lead with empathy in every interaction. Compassion is not a department — it is the lens through which every decision is made, every program is designed, and every person is received. We see the whole human, not just the problem to be solved.
Trust is the currency of community work. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and honesty — in how we use our resources, in how we communicate with donors, and in how we honour the people who rely on us.
Borders are lines on maps, not limits on humanity. We serve without discrimination — across nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, or background. Every person who walks through our door or reaches out for help is met with dignity and full belonging.
We do not see the people we serve as recipients of charity. We see them as agents of change. Our programs are designed to build capability, confidence, and self-sufficiency — so that our greatest success is the day someone no longer needs us.
Every step forward has been a collective act — of courage, generosity, and relentless belief in what's possible.
La Patrona isn't a building — it's the people who show up. Our volunteers, staff, and community members are the hands and hearts that turn mission into reality, every single day.
"Every hand that joins us makes the work more possible. Could yours be next?"
